Ceramic Artist - Hilda Merom

For almost twenty years, Israeli ceramic artist Hilda Merom has been producing functional ware and sculptural pieces using a variety of firing techniques. It is the creative and unusual art of saggar firing which holds the greatest fascination for her.  Lately she also especially enjoys her "stone series"  and her "saggar rock work"a combination of craggy, textured surfaces with very smooth ones. Through this process she feels her ideas about clay work art and life are brought to the fore.
Her rough, textured, artistic ceramic work is achieved by many additions to the clay body and by a saggar firing surrounded by a variety of organic materials.

"It took years of hard work and experimentation to realize that the means to my artistic development and authentic style are tightly bound to my local environment, to the landscape surrounding my home, in the Galilee, and to the neighboring people: Jews, Arabs and Druze.  They supply the organic materials that I work with and I believe they sustain my work.
My work is a result of the interaction between clay and color, the never-ending search for a connection with the Earth..."

Hilda also teaches and gives lectures upon request about her work and her experience in China during her Artist in Residence.
